Communication Technology Issues

Communication technology, defined as any form of technology which allows for communication, can be found in educational, organizational and personal communication. Communication technology, while beneficial, has faults which you should be aware of before using.

  1. Nonverbal Communication

    • You utilize nonverbal communication cues, like facial expressions and body language, in face to face communication in order to reinforce your message. Electronic communication, such as email and text messages, does not allow for nonverbal communication, leaving your message more vulnerable to being misunderstood.

    Educational Communication

    • Computer mediated communication, like email and websites, can be very beneficial in a classroom setting. Unfortunately, computers are costly, causing a significant dent in the budget of school systems. (See References 3)

    Organizational Communication

    • Electronic communication makes organizational communication more accessible, which may lead to communication overload and the blending of work life into home life. (See Resources 2)

    Personal Communication

    • Communication technology, like cell phones and instant messages, leaves you accessible to your family and friends at all times, making it difficult to find time alone. (See References 1) Computer-mediated communication, like blogs and social networking websites, gives a greater amount of people access to personal information which you choose to post, meaning good judgment over what information you post is essential. (See References 2)

    Digital Divide

    • The digital divide, which is the gap of technology knowledge between classes of people, can be affected by factors such as age, race, and finances. Cell phones cause a smaller digital divide than computers because cell phones cost less. (See Resources 1)
