Medication for IBD in Cats
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common cause of chronic diarrhea and vomiting in cats. While IBD is rarely cured, it can be successfully managed with a combination of medications and proper diet. If your cat has regular diarrhea or vomiting, a visit to the vet is in order.

What is IBD?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a disease of the stomach and/or intestines. The cells responsible for the cat's immune system invade the wall of the stomach and intestines and cause inflammation. Inflammatory bowel disease is caused by an abnormal immune reaction, causing the invasion of the cells.
Symptoms

The most common symptoms of IBD are diarrhea and vomiting. Stools may have mucus and blood as the condition progresses. Cats may begin to lose weight and become lethargic if the diarrhea or vomiting is severe.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are the most common treatments for cats with IBD. Oral prednisone works well in many cases. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, immune suppressant and appetite stimulant. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, oral prednisone has relatively few side effects and is potent in most cases.
Antibiotics

Antibiotics, particularly metronidazole, can be helpful in controlling secondary infections in the intestinal tract. Long-term use of metronidazole is well tolerated by cats, although loss of appetite and vomiting may occur. Metronidazole has an unpleasant taste, so it may be helpful to use flavored tablets or liquid medication.
Antidiarrheals

In cases of severe or chronic diarrhea, antidiarrheal medication (such as Imodium) may be helpful. If your cat is losing weight or becoming dehydrated due to excessive diarrhea, please consult with your vet about giving an antidiarrheal medication.
Diet

Your cat may benefit from changes in diet. Some cats develop an intolerance to particular foods, especially grains, which can exacerbate IBD. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, adding dietary fiber may also be helpful. Canned pumpkin is a good source of fiber, and it can be helpful in managing symptoms of IBD.
