What Is the Food Web of a Night Parrot?

The night parrot, or Pezoporus occidentalis, is an Australian native and has been spotted only intermittently since 1979, when it was rediscovered. Little is known about them except that they are herbivores, nocturnal and cautious. Such information is enough to draw out a food web of the night parrot.

  1. Habitat

    • Night parrots are found throughout the central parts of Australia, usually in dry regions.

    • Night parrots eat a variety of seeds and plant matter, including spinifex grass seeds.

    Predators

    • Predators of the night parrot include any carnivore that shares its habitat. Likely predators are snakes such as the common death adder or rats that feed on the parrot's eggs.

    What Eats the Predators

    • Larger carnivores such as the wedge-tailed eagle prey on snakes and rats. Smaller carnivores or omnivores, such as other snakes or the sugar glider, eat the eggs of snakes and baby rats.

    Producers

    • The producers in this food web are the plants eaten by the night parrot and the sugar glider, which is an omnivore. Plants include the spinifex grasses, acacia and eucalyptus.
