Flat Monitor Vs. CRT
When it comes to computer displays, there are two main types: CRTs and flat-panel monitors. While flat panels have become much more popular on the desktop, you still may want to know how to compare the two.
-
CRT Basics
-
CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube. This type of display is large and box-like compared to a flat panel. This technology is also used in older televisions.
Flat-Panel Basics
-
For computers, most flat panels are LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays). These displays use a layer of molecules that align in a certain way when electricity passes through them. This creates color and motion that passes through a glass filter.
-
Physical Flat Panel Advantages
-
Flat panels are much lighter than CRTs that have a comparable screen size. Since flat panels are not boxy, they also take up less space on a desk.
Flat Panel Image Quality
-
A flat panel also has higher contrast, which allows for sharper text and more vibrant colors. CRTs also tend to get fuzzy over a period of years, whereas a flat panel will not.
CRT Advantages
-
Despite this, a CRT can be purchased for a much lower price than a comparable flat panel, partly because it won't last as long but also because the technology is cheaper to manufacture.
