Calluses on Feet

Calluses are thickened layers of skin that can occur when there is friction. Calluses can sometimes be painful. According to the Mayo Clinic, those with diabetes should be very careful in self-treating calluses and seek the advice of their doctor.

  1. Identification

    • Calluses appear on the bottom or sides of the feet as a thickened patch of skin. If the callus is present on a pressure point of the foot, walking may be painful.

    Causes

    • Calluses are caused by friction from improper footwear or when the person's balance or bone structure prevents him from walking properly.

    Home Treatments

    • Calluses on the feet can be treated by soaking the feet and then filing the area with a pumice stone. Trimming the dead skin can also be helpful.

    Medical Treatments

    • The doctor can prescribe salicylic acid to break down the excess layers of dead skin on the feet. As a last resort, surgery may be necessary.

    Considerations

    • Diabetics may cause infection when attempting to treat calluses at home. Those who suffer from diabetes should seek the assistance of their primary doctor or dermatologist in safely treating calluses.
