Types of Therapy for Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental conditions experienced by humans. Doctors refer to depression as either clinical depression or major depression. There are several types of treatment for depression because it is not something that you can usually get over by yourself.

  1. Psychotherapy

    • Psychotherapy is a common treatment for depression and is usually coupled with the use of antidepressants. This is a type of therapy that involves talking about your condition and related issues with a mental health professional.

    Cognitive Behavior Therapy

    • Cognitive behavior therapy is one of the most popular types of treatment aimed at curing depression. It helps to identify negative thinking, behavior, pessimism and other factors that lead to depression. Once these thoughts are brought into the open, the patient can being to attempt to change.

    Interpersonal Therapy

    • Interpersonal therapy aims to see if depression may be linked to a troubled emotional relationship with another person. This type of therapy usually goes on for ten to twenty weeks and has been proven to work very well.

    Psychodynamic Therapy

    • Psychodynamic therapy is a type of therapy which aims to see if depression might be linked to a negative event that happened earlier in the patient's life. This type of therapy is usually shorter than interpersonal therapy and will only continue if the doctor can link your depression to an event that took place in the past.

    Electroconvulsive Therapy

    • Electroconvulsive therapy is not a type of "talk" therapy and involves electrical currents being passed through the head in order to cause a seizure. This type of therapy is not used immediately and will only be turned to when "talk" therapy and medication does not work. It offers fast and effective relief for those with serious cases of depression.
