    • Keshi pearls are made as a result of a mistake during an oyster's pearl-making process.

    Natural Pearl Formation

    • Normal pearls are formed when an intruding substance is embedded in the pearl and covered by a substance called nacre.

    Keshi Pearl Formation

    • Keshi pearls are formed when the oyster spits out the intruding substance before the pearl formation is complete, or the substance breaks apart. The result is a pearl made of 100% nacre.

    • Keshi pearls can be found in oysters located in both fresh and salt water.

    Shape

    • The shape of a Keshi pearl is different from the more common perfect spheres seen in traditional pearl necklaces. Keshi pearls range in diameter from 2 to 8 mm and are often flatter than round pearls.
