Stomach Medication for Cats

Your vet can suggest the proper medication for your cat's stomach ailments.

Cats can suffer from many of the same stomach ailments as humans. There are medications that can help to ease these ailments, but it is important to consult with your veterinarian before giving your cat any medicine in order to avoid adverse effects.

  1. Misoprostol

    • Misoprostol is an anti-ulcer medication that works to heal the lining of the stomach. Cats may develop ulcers from long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Erosions in the lining of the stomach are another common cause of ulcers in cats. Misoprostol inhibits stomach acid and protects the lining of the stomach wall. This medication is available only with a prescription from your veterinarian.

    Cimetidine HCI

    • Cimetidine HCI is a drug that can be used in cats to treat and prevent stomach ulcers. This medication is a histamine receptor blocker, which blocks stomach acid secretions. This is an over-the-counter medication, but you should consult your veterinarian for the correct dosage for your cat.

    Sucralfate

    • Sucralfate is an anti-ulcer drug that is often used by veterinarians to treat gastritis in cats. Gastritis can cause irritation and inflammation of the stomach, causing discomfort and may interfere with the cat's appetite. This medication may also be prescribed to treat acid reflux symptoms in cats. This medicine is available only by prescription.

    Considerations

    • Some medical conditions that can cause stomach discomfort in cats are esophagitis, gastritis, stomach ulcers, cancer of the stomach, hiatal hernia and a narrowing of the esophagus.

    Warning

    • Be sure to contact your veterinarian before giving your cat any medication. There are many medications such as acetaminophen, that are safe for dogs, but can be deadly to cats.
