Can You Wash Alpaca Sweaters?
The alpaca, once considered a national treasure by the Inca civilization, produces a sumptuous natural fiber that is soft and non-scratchy like cashmere, and lighter, stronger and warmer than wool. If you do not want the expenditure of dry cleaning, you can hand wash your alpaca garment. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Washing
-
Use a mild soap like gentle shampoo; Commercial soaps made for wool are not recommended. Soak the alpaca sweater in warm water with a temperature of about 85 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). Gently swirl the sweater through the water.
Rinsing
-
Place the sweater in clean water at the same wash-water temperature. Lightly press the water from the sweater. Do not wring or twist.
-
Transporting
-
When carrying the sweater from the washing spot, hold it carefully. When wet, the alpaca fabric can be easily stretched out of shape and, if this happens too often, it will weaken the fibers.
Drying
-
Place the sweater on a dry towel and form it to its original shape. Roll up the sweater in the towel and press down to eliminate excess water. Repeat this step with another clean, dry towel. Lay the sweater on a third, dry, clean towel on a flat surface. Again, form it to its original shape, and let it air dry. Carefully smooth any wrinkles by hand before the sweater is dry.
Folding
-
Fold your Alpaca sweater with care to prevent a center crease. Lay it flat on a closet shelf or in a dresser drawer. Never hang an Alpaca sweater; it will stretch out of shape. If ironing is needed, use a cool iron.
