Signs and Symptoms of a More Severe Staph Infection

Most infections caused by staph, a bacteria-based germ commonly located on the skin and nose, remain relatively harmless. However severe staph infections can lead to serious complications and, in some instances, possibly death.

  1. In the Bloodstream

    • Staph infections which permeate the bloodstream, a condition commonly referred to as bacteremia, can contaminate the heart and lungs. A fever, and possible pneumonia, may serve as symptoms of bacteremia.

    Toxic Shock

    • The potentially deadly staph infection known as toxic shock syndrome remains a severe form of blood poisoning. Symptoms may include seizures, headache, vomiting, high fever, as well as the appearance of a red rash on the palms and soles.

    Joint Pain

    • Septic arthritis, another type of staph infection, can affect various joints throughout the body. Symptoms include severe joint pain, chills, and fever.

    Considerations

    • People who exhibit any signs or symptoms of a staph infection, including pus-filled boils, rashes, or high fever, should seek medical attention immediately.

    Warning

    • Sepsis remains the most serious complication relating to severe staph infections. Sepsis occurs when the infection leaks into the bloodstream, causing shock and possibly deadly low blood pressure.
