Is Aquamarine Used for Anything Besides Jewelry?

Aquamarine, the traditional March birthstone, is a hard, lustrous stone usually used in jewelry. It is a common gemstone that is mined worldwide, with Brazil being the largest producer.

Historical Uses

Aquamarines have been recognized since written history began. They were carried by ancient sailors as protection from the seas. People also placed aquamarines beneath their pillows to insure a good night's sleep, and the mineral was believed to ward off poison.

Common Uses

By far the most common use of the aquamarine is in jewelry. Because of its physical qualities, it is a favorite of jewelry designers.

The metaphysical function of aquamarines are many, including releasing anger, aiding meditation, providing clarity and giving courage.

Medical Uses

When the Germans first began making eyeglasses, slivers of aquamarine were used as the lenses for nearsightedness.

Summation

There are, for all practical purposes, no uses for aquamarines except as gemstones. They are not used in industry.
