What Is a Toyota Urban Runner?

by Jen Philion

The Toyota Urban Runner is a version of the company's mid-sized sport utility vehicle, the 4Runner. Introduced in 2008, the Urban Runner features package was designed to bring technology and upscale luxury features to an SUV that has long been known for rugged performance.

Origin

Toyota introduced the 4Runner in 1984. At the time, it created a new concept in vehicles, combining the durability and performance of Toyota pickup trucks with the comfort of a passenger car.

Changes

The 4Runner has gone through several generations of redesigns and changes during its lifespan, but as of late 2009, it was still one of the top 20 researched vehicle models on the Edmunds.com vehicle review site.

Marketing

The Urban Runner was billed by Toyota as "adding a new dimension in style, value, and upscale luxury to the capable SUV."

Features

Toyota used the 4Runner Sport Edition as the base for the Urban Runner, and added features including new seat fabrics, side steps, roof rails and a new rear spoiler.

Technology

The biggest difference between the Urban Runner and other varieties of the 4Runner is the focus on technology. According to Net Car Show, the 2009 Urban Runner featured a detachable personal navigation unit, along with a stereo system that offers WMA/MP3 CD capability, wireless connectivity, satellite radio capability and the ability to connect an MP3 player.
