What Is the Origin of The Penny Loafer?

Shoes, whether understated or flashy, pull together an outfit. Simple and classic, the penny loafer is a shoe that has stood the test of time. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Origin

    • Maine-based G.H. Bass & Co introduced the penny loafer in 1936. The Weejun was based on a shoe worn by Norwegian fisherman.

    Popularity

    • Through the 1950s and 60s, the Bass Weejun rose to popularity after celebrities such as James Dean and Steve McQueen were seen sporting the shoes.

    Evolution

    • The preppy fad of the 1980s put the penny loafer back on people's feet. Worn with or without white socks, this shoe symbolized the clean-cut fashion trend of the decade.

    Reemergence

    • Bass reintroduced new versions of the Weejun in 2005 as fashion began to recycle trends of the 80s. The new penny loafers were available in a variety of colors for ladies and with a squared-toe for men.

    Fun Fact

    • As loafers are characterized by lack of buckles or laces, the split-lip strap across the vamp was added as a decorative element. Though not necessarily intended to hold coins, the slot became a place to store good luck pennies.
