What Are Some of the Germs Commonly Found on Human Hands?

Germs commonly found on human hands are bacteria, viruses and fungi. Germs live on almost every surface hands may come in contact with. Some germs are healthy while others may cause illness.

  1. Germs

    • Germs are tiny organisms that can live almost everywhere, including in the water, in the air, on most surfaces, and on the human body.

    Bacteria

    • Bacteria are one-celled organisms that can cause infection when inside the human body. Infections from bacteria may include strep throat, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and tuberculosis.

    Viruses

    • Viruses need to be inside something that is living, such as a human, animal or plant, in order to survive. Viruses can cause illnesses such as the common cold, influenza and herpes.

    Fungi

    • Fungi are multi-cell organisms that tend to live in warm, damp places. Fungi can cause skin problems, such as athlete's foot and ring worm.

    Hand Washing

    • Frequent and proper hand washing is important for preventing germs from entering the human body, or spreading germs onto other people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing hands with soap and water for 15 to 20 seconds.
