Roses are a beautiful, colorful addition to any garden. However, many problems arise that cause growers to scratch their heads in confusion. If you fall under this label, knowing the diseases and pests that harm your roses will lead to peace of mind and successful growing. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • There are seven main types: floribunda, hybrid tea, grandiflora, shrub and landscape, climber, miniature and tree roses. Each species has its own characteristics and some are hardier than others. The hardier roses such as the hybrid teas, have fewer pest and diseases, however, they are still susceptible.

    Geography

    • Roses can grow in many different climates but where you live will determine what care you need. For instance, if you plant roses in the South, they require maintenance throughout the year. Climate also factors into what pests and diseases you might have and when they might cause harm to your roses.

    Considerations

    • Slugs, snails and caterpillars cause jagged holes to form on your leaves. Japanese beetles also produce this type of damage. They're identifiable by the five spots of white located on each side of this insect. Their color is a shiny, bright green that reflects in the sun. One method of removing these pests is to pick them off once darkness falls.

    Facts

    • Powdery mildew can appear on your roses as a grayish white, dusty powder. If your plant shines silver, spider mites are responsible. Deer are to blame if you find your roses flattened and lying on the ground first thing in the morning.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Selecting the right area to plant your roses is half the battle. Place netting around your plants for protection from deer. Water and fertilize your rose plants with the correct amount needed to prevent certain fungal diseases. Use insecticides and fungicides as needed. Try above methods first. Look for organic ingredients that contain sulfur, neem or those with potassium bicarbonate if spray is your only option.
