Business Lunch Etiquette
Business lunches are very important. Whether it be for an interview or for a business meeting, having proper etiquette can go a long way. Following these tips can help make a smooth lunch and assist in getting the results you want.
-
Be On Time
-
It may sound simple, but be on time. Leave yourself plenty of time to arrive. Being late is unprofessional and says you do not care that much about the lunch.
Handshake
-
Whether you arrive first or last, offer a nice, firm handshake. This may seem strange advice for a woman, but it is important. Some people may not want to shake your hand, but it is still proper to offer.
-
Cell Phone
-
As in most offices, it is proper to turn off or silence your cell phone during a business lunch. Taking a phone call during a business lunch shows a lack of respect for the people whom with you are eating.
Drinks
-
The rule of thumb here is that if the client orders a glass of wine, you may order one as well. If you do not drink, feel free to order water or another beverage. Never drink too much alcohol during a business lunch.
Business Talk
-
Phyllis Davis, the president of Executive Mentoring and Coaching, suggests that the proper time to talk business is later in the meal. "Consider broaching more serious business discussions as you begin to complete your entrees," she says. You do not want to go right into business at the beginning, and after the food digests people tend to get sleepy.
Paying the Bill
-
If you are the one setting up the lunch, it is proper for you to pay the bill. If you arrive early, you can have the waiter swipe your credit card prior to the meal so that the check never even comes to your table. You can also instruct the waiter to hand you the check at the end of the meal to avoid confusion.
