Guitar Repair Tools
Most guitar repairs can be performed with a few common tools. However, some repairs require very specialized tools. The special tools usually produce heat or steam and are needed to loosen the glue used in making guitars.
-
Allen wrenches
-
These wrenches are used to adjust the truss rod in the guitar neck. The truss rod helps keep the neck straight. A warped neck will cause buzzing on frets or cause the action to be too high.
Screwdrivers
-
Most guitars have plastic pieces that cover components. Small screwdrivers are needed to access these components. Even the truss rod has a cover that needs to be removed before you can access it. Most electric guitar bridges have many screws. Some mount the bridge to the guitar and others are used to adjust the saddles and intonation.

Heaters and irons
-
Acoustic guitars are glued together with a very strong glue called hide glue. This glue needs to be heated to soften it in the event of repairs. The heaters and irons have unique shapes that make a luthier's job easier. Heaters and irons are most commonly used to remove fingerboards and necks from acoustic guitars.
Soldering irons
-
Electric guitars have the pickups, tone and volume controls, and the cable jack wired together. These wires are soldered to the components to make the best connection.
Fret tool
-
Frets are the wire bars that sit on the guitar neck. They are used to change the pitch of the strings. Guitar necks have a slight radius to them. When you replace a fret it must be bent to match the neck's radius.
