Diabetes & Depression in Dogs

Many dogs suffer from serious health problems, such as canine diabetes and depression. Some dogs may experience both at the same time. It can be difficult to watch your dog suffer both physically and mentally.

  1. Canine Diabetes

    • Canine diabetes mellitus is an insulin deficiency, creating a situation in which the dog's body can't metabolize sugar. According to the "Dog Diabetes Guide" at www.diabetesindogs.net, an estimated one in 500 dogs suffers from signs of diabetes mellitus.

    Symptoms of Canine Diabetes

    • Symptoms of canine diabetes may include lethargy, excessive water consumption, increased urination and weight gain or weight loss.

    Canine Depression

    • Just like humans, dogs may also become depressed. An environment change, a change in weather or a chemical imbalance may lead to canine depression.

    Symptoms of Canine Depression

    • Symptoms of canine depression include loss of appetite, weight loss, sleepiness, loss of interest in toys or activities, aggression, and anxious or restless behavior. In addition, dogs may experience depression when they have a medical condition or when something is physically wrong with them.

    Treatment

    • It's important that canine diabetes is not left untreated. Certain medications, such as Vetsulin, are used to treat diabetes. According to the "Dog Diabetes Guide," "If the diabetes is left uncontrolled, your dog can suffer serious consequences. For example, it can become ketotic, which may lead to depression, vomiting, weakness and rapid breathing."
