Is it Easy to Get Pregnant the Same Month As a Miscarriage? thumbnail
Miscarriage is more likely in the first three months.

It is possible to conceive between a pregnancy loss and the next expected menstruation period. Ease of conception is relative to all factors affecting fertility.

  1. Definition

    • A normal pregnancy lasts between 38 to 42 weeks from the start of the last menstrual period. Loss before 20 weeks is termed miscarriage, or spontaneous abortion.

    Frequency/Risks

    • Miscarriage occurs in 15 to 20 percent of pregnancies, usually in the first three months. For most, the cause is unknown and future pregnancies are not impacted. Risk factors for miscarriage include chromosomal abnormalities, maternal infection or disease, substance abuse, blood incompatibilities and weakened cervix.

    Symptoms

    • A miscarriage is characterized by bleeding during early pregnancy. Heavy bleeding, backache and abdominal cramping, as well as passing clots or tissue, are signs that a miscarriage is taking place.

    Sex

    • When bleeding has stopped, it is safe to resume sexual activity. Ovulation can take place as early as two weeks following a miscarriage. This is the time when pregnancy can occur.

    Waiting

    • Many healthcare professionals advise waiting at least eight weeks after miscarriage before attempting to become pregnant again, but there are no controlled studies to support this in normal healthy women. Good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle improve the chances of carrying a pregnancy to term.
