Tens Treatment for Nerve Damage

Found This Helpful

When you suffer from peripheral neuropathy, or nerve damage, you have a variety of options like pain relievers or lidocaine patches. Another treatment option to manage your nerve damage is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

Significance

  • Peripheral neuropathy causes tingling or a burning sensation in your hands and feet.

Benefits

  • With TENS therapy, you’ll receive a gentle electric current via adhesive electrodes placed on your skin. This therapy relieves pain in your affected area.

History

  • According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), in 1965 Dr. Ronald Melzac and Dr. Patrick Wall created the Gate Control Theory which involved preventing the awareness of pain through electrical stimulation. TENS has been used since the 1970s.

Warning

  • TENS treatment must be used correctly to have a positive effect. If the electrical current is too high you can be burned. Also, electrodes should not be placed on your throat, brain, heart or eyes. Do not use TENS treatment if you have heart problems.

Time Frame

  • According to ACS, TENS therapy does reduce mild pain for a short time, but doesn’t reduce chronic pain.
