Can You Freeze Spices?

Most spices can be safely frozen, provided they are placed into an airtight container prior to placing them in the freezer. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Freezing Spices

    • One of the best and simplest methods to freezing a spice is to place it inside of a freezer storage bag, that then is placed inside of another bag.

    Increase in Shelf Life

    • Freezing a spice will increase its shelf life, although the amount of the increase varies by spice. Generally speaking, frozen spices should be safe for consumption for up to one year.

    Change in Flavor

    • Unfortunately, many spices will lose their flavor if they are frozen for extended periods of time. Pepper, cloves and garlic will become strong and bitter. Salt typically will lose its flavor and some of its preservative properties.

    Change in Moisture

    • Spices stored in the freezer and repeatedly removed often will experience a loss of flavor due to the formation of condensation and an increase in the moisture level.

Prepare Fresh Herbs in Ice Tray

    • Prepared herbs can be frozen into an ice cube tray, then dropped directly into the desired dish. Freezing this way preserves the flavor.
