Job Description for a Church Office Manager

A church office manager does more than just handle the daily operations of the church. This person does general tasks such as organizing and filing paperwork, as well as specific tasks such as creating the church newsletter and contacting individual church members when necessary.

  1. Requirements

    • To become a church office manager you need to be familiar with the church and to have personal relationships with its members. You also need to know how to use a computer and communicate with large and small groups.

    Staff Management

    • The church office manager is responsible for providing support to all staff members working for the church. Often he or she will be in charge of hiring, firing and disciplining of staff members. Additionally, this person is called upon to handle the ordering of new supplies and equipment for their use.

    Personal Assistance

    • Church office managers often work directly with the pastor or deacon. It's their responsibility to proofread sermons and other papers written by the pastor, often before anyone else reads or hears them.

    Size

    • If the church is large and offers many programs, the office manager must perform more duties. Working in the Sunday school class and helping with day care and special events will be among their tasks.

    Warning

    • Many churches do a formal review once a year on all church employees. Those who aren't working well, including the office manager, can lose their jobs.
