Why Don't People Report Crimes to the Police?

Crime goes under-reported all around the world. As a former police officer, I have heard of many reasons for this, from citizens I met in the line of duty and from published studies about this problem.

  1. Too Petty to Report

    • Some victims and witnesses consider certain incidents to be too unimportant to waste their time reporting them to the police.

    Too Embarrassed

    • Some victims, especially those who have suffered through rape or domestic violence, are too embarrassed to report their victimization.

    Afraid of Retribution

    • Crime sometimes goes unreported because the victims and witnesses are afraid that the offender will come after them, seeking revenge.

    It Won't Do Any Good

    • Some crimes go unreported because people believe that the police either don't care, or that they can't do anything about the crime.

    Want to Get Revenge Themselves

    • In some cases, a victim will choose to not report a crime because he plans to take matters into his own hands and personally exact his revenge against the offender.

Afraid That They May Be Arrested

    • Some victims are criminals themselves. They often would rather not interact with the police at all, even in situations where they are the victim.

Ok i was a victim of a assault with a deadly weapon on november 2009 and the cop told me that i should go to the hospital to check for infections. I told him i wont because i don't have insurance plus it was not deep of a cut and ill be able to go home. I repeated my self over to him and he was ignorant but at the time so much crap was going on because of a huge rumble that i was not involve at a party so i told him fine, (never take a cops word). Then several more cops come to the hospital wanting me to press charges but i said no several times for my safety. They got very mad and walk away. Now its February and i got a huge bill for 16k !!!. That cop lied to me. Now i call back to find out that cops name and badge number and they are giving me the run around to find my case number. Now i do want to press charges cvictim want to sue that person and make him or victum of compensation...
