What Is a Contingent Employment Contract?

Workers who agree to a contingent employment contract agreement carry out agreed work. The contract ends when they are done.

  1. Expectations

    • With a contingent employment contract, employees expect their work for the employer to come to an end.

    Types

    • Typically, for contingent work, employers hire temporary workers, contract workers, independent contractors, seasonal workers, leased contract workers and on-call workers. Two examples are short-term secretaries and construction workers who are available to help complete projects.

    Time Frame

    • A prearranged duration of employment between calendar dates makes the employment contingent. Work does not continue past an agreed ending date.

    Scope

    • An employer that hires an employee to complete work specified in an employment contract keeps the agreement limited to only that work.

    Considerations

    • Workers who agree to contingent work do not agree to permanent employment. The employer has the option to continue the employment past the contract's end by making a decision upon fulfillment of the agreed duration or the agreed work.
