About Merkur Safety Razors
The term "safety razor" generally refers to one using disposable single- or double-edged blades, engineered not to cut. Merkur Solingen is one of a few manufacturers that continue to produce safety razors. Does this Spark an idea?

Company
-
Merkur Solingen is a division of Dovo Solingen, based in Solingen, Germany. The town is an historic center of blacksmithing technology. Merkur has outlasted Gillette in production of safety razors; Gillette patented the design in 1901.
Design
-
Merkur offers several safety razors in the classic sandwich design, in which you screw off a two-part head from a shaft, place a double-edged blade between and reassemble the head. These come in both the open-tooth design (resembling a comb) and straight-edged variety (with a ridged but not open edge).

Updates
-
Merkur is rare among razor makers in offering modern designs in safety razors. These include its Futur, which is a perfectly smooth-metal design; and the Vision, with a twist-to-open design.
Blades
-
Merkur, like most historic blade manufacturers, produces double-edged razor blades. These are in high-quality stainless steel, designed to be useful for several shaves (older, carbon-steel blades rusted quickly).
Availability
-
The Dovo Solingen company does not offer direct retail sales, but its razors are available from certain online retailers.
