Can a Prepaid Visa Card Be Blocked?

Purchases made with prepaid Visa cards may be declined or blocked due to insufficient funds, holds or unauthorized use.

  1. Liability Protection

    • Visa has a zero liability policy that may protect you against unauthorized charges that cause your card to be declined or blocked.

    Fraud Prevention

    • When you get your card, write down the customer service number that's on the back and file it so it is easily accessible. If your card is lost or stolen, call your card provider immediately.

    Declined Purchases

    • Your purchase will be declined if it exceeds the balance on your card. There is no overdraft on prepaid cards.

    Balance Holds

    • Visa warns that when prepaid cards are used for certain expenses, such as gas, hotels and restaurants, the business may place a hold on the card for the estimated amount of the bill. That money would not be available for other uses until you pay the final bill.

    Tip

    • To ensure authorized use, sign your card before using it. Prepaid cards may need to be activated before use; instructions should come with the card.
