Passive Vs. Active Speakers
You can categorize speakers within a home entertainment theater system as active or passive. There's a significant difference between sound quality and performance based on which type of speakers you have in your speaker system.
-
Amps
-
Active speakers have a built-in amplifier. This streamlines the process between speaker and amplifier.
Subwoofers
-
If you have a passive system, the subwoofer is your only active speaker. For those who don't know, a subwoofer plays low-frequency bass sounds.
-
Passive Speakers
-
Unlike active speakers, passive speakers don't come with a built-in amplifier. Instead, a speaker wire must connect the passive speaker to an external amplifier.
Availability
-
Because the majority of home theater systems use passive speakers, it's much easier to find a passive setup. Furthermore, most active speakers are normally incredibly high-end speakers or incredibly poor-quality speakers. In other words, there really isn't any middle ground in today's active speaker market.
Considerations
-
Although most sound experts agree that active speaker setups provide more efficiency and output because of the built-in amplifier, the purchase decision ultimately rests with the consumer. Passive systems are much more common and normally more affordable. Essentially, it comes down to performance versus budget.
