Tuxedo Etiquette for a Business Gala

Perfect for a business event; no gimmicks, no colors, a good fit.

Business galas sometimes call for "black tie" or "formal attire," and sometimes "black tie optional." Even when black tie is "optional," the rules of etiquette are distinct.

  1. Definition

    • According to "Etiquette Advantage: Rules for the Business Professional" (Moore, 1998), "black tie" or "formal attire" calls for a black tuxedo; a white, starched and studded shirt; a hand-tied bow tie; and patent-leather or very fine black leather shoes. A solid-black necktie is also suitable.

    Colors

    • The studs for a black-tie event should be black, the cuff links gold or black and the bow tie black only. Colored ties and whimsical links are unsuitable for the occasion.

    Accessories

    • Avoid cummerbunds or vests unless you are the host. You may add a dash of color with a subdued pocket square.

    Optional

    • Only if the invitation specifies "black tie optional" may a man wear a suit; the suit must be black, dark gray or navy (preferably without patterns), and a white shirt and dark tie.

    Etiquette

    • Skip the whimsical takes on the tuxedo.

Wearing the tuxedo, versus a suit, is more respectful of the occasion, and the better choice for a company officer or manager. "Remember that your business reputation is always on view," advises the book "Power Etiquette" (Casperson, 1999).
