Nose Bleeds Due to Allergies

Nose

The inside of the nose contains blood vessels that are sensitive and fragile. Their fragile state leaves them susceptible to being damaged, which will cause bleeding. Some individuals suffer from nose bleeds due to allergies.

  1. Causes

    • Allergies cause the nasal membranes to become dry, swollen and irritated which in extreme cases will make the nose bleed. This can be triggered by blowing the nose or sneezing, which are common during an allergic episode.

    Treatment

    • To treat a nose bleed, apply pressure by pinching the nostrils of the nose and tilt the head forward.

    Considerations

    • People commonly tip their head back in order to try to stop a nose bleed. By doing so, blood runs down the throat which causes coughing, choking and vomiting.

    Time Frame

    • Nosebleeds usually stop within 10 minutes of applying pressure to the nose.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent a nose bleed that is caused by allergies, moisten this inside of the nostrils with petroleum jelly or saline drops. Decongestants and antihistamines will help prevent the allergies from occurring and will lessen the likelihood of the nose bleeding.
