The Difference Between MS & Spondylosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is caused by damage to the protective covering of nerve cells. This disrupts your brain's ability to communicate with your body. Spondylosis is usually brought on by age and causes you to lose normal spinal function. MS and spondylosis have some similar symptoms.

  1. Similar Symptoms

    • Symptoms shared by MS and spondylosis include trouble walking; lack of coordination; numbness; weakness or tingling in your legs, feet, hands and arms; and loss of bowel and bladder control.

    MS Symptoms

    • Other MS symptoms can include muscle spasms; arm or leg weakness; double vision; facial pain; slurred speech; trouble chewing or swallowing; and fatigue. You might also have depression, trouble reasoning and memory loss.

    Spondylosis Symptoms

    • Other spondylosis symptoms include pain and stiffness in the neck; abnormal reflexes; and pain in the arm, chest or shoulders.

    MS Treatment

    • Treatment includes medicines such as interferons, steroids and antidepressants to slow the progression of the disease and control symptoms. You might also benefit from physical, speech or occupational therapy.

    Spondylosis Treatment

    • Over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medicines, as well as prescription muscle relaxers and corticosteroid injections, are used to treat spondylosis. Other treatment includes neck braces, physical therapy and surgery.
