What Are the Attributes of Dysfunctional Family Communication Patterns?

Communication patterns are an essential part of family health. Family health is dependent on creating a system to allow your family to function. A system for functioning is set through communication patterns. A family which exhibits poor communication patterns is likely to become a dysfunctional family.

  1. Dysfunctional Family

    • A dysfunctional family is a family in which one or more family members endanger, physically or emotionally, other members of the family. Power struggles can be a common cause of poor family health.

    Power Struggles

    • The inability to use communication to solve family power struggles creates a dysfunctional family system. Without solving family power struggles, the rules of the family system and the enforcer of these rules are seriously compromised.

    Listening

    • Family health depends on a family's ability to discuss the thoughts and concerns of all family members before making a decision that will affect the entire family. This involves listening to the input of all family members. In a dysfunctional family, the concerns of all family members are not addressed when making decisions that affect everyone in the family.

    Self-Centeredness

    • The intimidator (one who does the emotional/physical endangering) in a dysfunctional family is self-centered and does his best to bend the will of his family to fit his needs. For example, if a dysfunctional family was to go on vacation, the intimidator would choose the vacation spot without taking into consideration the needs or desires of his family.

    Future Generations

    • Dysfunctional family communication patterns tend to spread throughout generations, because a child who grows up in a dysfunctional family is likely to utilize the same dysfunctional communication patterns when starting a family of her own.
