Can You Download to an iPod Using More Than One Computer?

You need to attach an iPod to a computer in order to download music to it. You can download music to your iPod using different computers, but there are some limitations to this ability, and you will need to make some changes to your computer and iPod's settings.

  1. Automatic Mode

    • An iPod can only be synced to one computer at a time. The first computer you connect an iPod to is referred to as its "home" computer. In the default Automatic mode, when you connect your iPod to a different computer, you will need to erase the contents of the iPod and sync it with the new computer, making this computer your iPod's "home" computer.

    Manual Mode

    • If you want to download music from a second computer without erasing all the music from your "home" computer, you will need to change your iPod's setting from Automatic mode to Manual mode. This can be done by selecting "iPod" in the source pane, clicking on "summary" and clicking "manually manage music and videos," "OK" and "Apply." You can then drag songs from iTunes into your iPod.

    Mac Vs. Windows

    • According to Apple.com support, you cannot use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac or vice versa.

    Authorized Computers

    • You can listen to a song purchased from the iTunes store on up to five authorized computers, unless it is an iTunes Plus version.

    Ipod Shuffle

    • IPod shuffles are the only iPod product that you can use to download music on only one computer.
