Heartgard Safety

Heargard is a brand name for the veterinary medication ivermectin. Despite its effectiveness at preventing heart worms in dogs and cats, Heartgard poses a risk for side effects in some animals.

  1. Types of Side Effects

    • The most common side effects of Heartgard are generally not serious in nature and pose no risk for long-term health complications. These include depression, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dilation of pupils and excessive salivation.

    Time Frame

    • The common side effects of Heartgard typically develop within 24 hours after your pet receives its dosage, explains Merial, the maker of Heargard.

    Features

    • Adverse reactions are most common at high or excessive doses of Heartgard. Collies are particularly susceptible to both common side effects and risks associated with Heartgard, cautions Merial.

    Risks

    • Infrequently, pets develop seizures or convulsions after taking Heartgard. Although extremely rare, coma and even death may occur following an excessive dose of Heartgard.

    Considerations

    • Since Heartgard is normally not dangerous unless your pet takes too much, use caution when storing the medication so that your dog or cat does not inadvertently get into the packaging and eat the pills.
