The Danger of Colon Cleaners

There are two approaches to colon cleansing. The oral approach involves ingesting colon cleaners in the form of pills, powders and herbs. Colonic irrigation is an alternate technique intended to flush your bowels and intestines. There are dangers associated with both approaches.

  1. Pills and Powders

    • Pills and powders are taken by mouth to assist in natural bowel movement, but they act more like laxatives. They cause more frequent bowel movements and may cause diarrhea and the loss of nutrients and good bacteria. These medications should be used with caution because you can become dependent on them and you may not be able to have normal bowel movements without them.

    Herbs

    • Cascara sagrada is an herb used in laxatives to promote bowel movement. Using too much of this herb can lead to abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, hepatitis and liver damage. Senna is a strong herb also found in laxatives. If not used correctly, this herb can lead to liver failure and blood diseases.

    Colon Irrigation

    • Colon irrigation is similar to an enema, but uses much more water. With this procedure, a machine pumps water into your intestines to flush out waste. Aside from abdominal discomforts, you risk getting a bacterial infection, having your bowel punctured, or absorbing too much water into your system.

    Considerations

    • The method you choose for colon cleansing will depend on your objectives, the time available and your budget. Colon cleanser products may be more affordable, but may take days to be effective. A one hour colonic irrigation session can cost up to $200.

    Cautions

    • There are many colon cleanser products on the market that claim to be safe, but some contain harsh chemicals. Choose products carefully and know the ingredients before using them. If you chose to have a colon irrigation, be sure the colon therapist is certified.
