What Are the Benefits of Joining a Gun Club?

Shooting guns isn't like shooting basketballs---you have to practice extreme safety and caution when you practice. Gun clubs provide a safe and legal environment to use your firearm.

  1. Types

    • Some gun clubs have ranges to fire pistols, rifles and other types of firearms, while others specialize in clay pigeon shooting, including skeet shooting, sporting clay shooting and trap shooting.

    Features

    • There is a social aspect to a gun club. Clubs often feature a clubhouse or picnic area where friends and family can spend time away from shooting.

    Competition

    • Clubs offer club, regional and national shooting competitions. If you get good enough practicing at your gun club, you might even want to consider training for the Olympics. The Summer Olympics include 15 total events for the pistol, rifle and shotgun.

    Warning

    • A gun club application will likely ask if you've been convicted of a felony, a misdemeanor disturbance or a domestic violence charge, and if you're allowed to own or possess firearms. You might also have to get a permit or an identification card that allows you to buy firearms in your state. Don't attempt to bring an illegally acquired gun into a club.

    History

    • The second amendment of the United States Constitution, ratified in 1791, gives people the right of gun ownership. It states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
