Sulfite Allergies in Children

Sulfites or sulphurous acid, is used as a preservative in processed foods. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimates that about one in 100 people living in the United States suffers from a sensitivity to sulfites. Like adults, children can develop a sulfite allergy at anytime.

  1. Foods

    • Children who have a sulfite allergy will be allergic to foods such as potato chips, dried fruit and canned vegetables.

    Effects

    • Effects of a sulfite allergy in children include rashes, cramping and headaches. If children have serious reactions, they may go into anaphylactic shock.

    Causes

    • Causes of sulfite allergies in children are unknown.

    Considerations

    • In 1986, the FDA banned sulfites from being put on raw fruits and vegetables. Manufacturers are now required to list sulfites on the product label if sulfites are used in making the product.

    Warning

    • Sulfite allergies can be deadly in children. If the ingredients in a food are not known, it is best to avoid the food to possibly prevent a reaction.
