What Are the Treatments for Sea Urchin Injury?
Sea urchins protect themselves with long, sharp spines. These can easily penetrate human skin and break off, releasing toxins into the body. These wounds can be very painful and will require immediate treatment.

Symptoms include immediate pain in the affected area, joint pain, numbness and swelling at the site. Some individuals may experience severe allergic reactions to sea urchin venom.
Spine Removal

Remove any remaining spines with tweezers or adhesive tape. The spines are very brittle and should be carefully pulled straight out.

Surgical Removal

Deep wounds may require the spines to be removed by minor surgery. Consult with your physician for more information.
Cleansing

Wash the area with soap and water and apply a topical antihistamine/antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection. Deep wounds may need to be treated with an oral antibiotic.
Pain Treatment

Soak the wounds in hot water at around 115 degrees F for 60 to 90 minutes to reduce pain and the effects of any venom. An over-the-counter analgesic can also help.
Vinegar Treatment

Soak the wound in warm vinegar or apply a compress of warm vinegar to the spines. The spines are primarily made of calcium, which the acid in vinegar will dissolve.
