What Does H2O Consist Of?

H2O, better known as water, consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The connection between these two elements exists in polarity. In other words, the negative charge of the oxygen attracts the positive charge of its accompanying hydrogen atoms.

  1. Atoms

    • Atoms are the basic building blocks of life; all matter, when broken down into its simplest forms, can be traced down to its atoms. Each atom consists of protons, neutrons and electrons. The number of protons determines an element's atomic number and its place on the periodic table of elements.

    Hydrogen

    • Hydrogen, symbolized in chemistry as "H," is the first and lightest atom on the periodic table. It consists of one proton. Despite its size, hydrogen accounts for 90 percent of the universe by weight.

    Oxygen

    • Oxygen, symbolized in chemistry as "O," consists of eight protons. It accounts for 20 percent of Earth's atmosphere.

    Temperature

    • H2O is the only natural substance that exists in all three chemical states: liquid, solid and gas -- or water, ice, and steam. Because H2O is so common, the Celsius temperature scale was based on it. Water's freezing point became 0 degrees Celsius, while its evaporation point became 100 degrees Celsius.

    Solvent

    • In its liquid state, H2O can break down more chemicals and compounds than any other liquid. As a result, water is often referred to as the "universal solvent."
