Difference Between a Poncho & a Serape

Serapes and ponchos are woven pieces of cloth that serve as warm outer clothing. Although both garments originated in Latin America, they differ in design and how they are worn. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • The serape, spelled "sarape" in Spanish, originated in northern Mexico in the 18th and 19th centuries. Vaqueros, or cowboys, used them as cloaks, bedding and saddle pads. Latin American Indians first wore ponchos.

    Differences

    • Serapes are rectangular and worn wrapped around the body. Ponchos are squares or rectangles and include a center opening for the wearer's head.

    Features

    • The fabric for both serapes and ponchos can feature bright colors and stripes or other geometric designs.

    Geography

    • Classic serapes are associated with the town of Saltillo, Mexico, which was once a major marketplace for the garments. In the mid-1800s, Navajo Indians began weaving their own versions of serapes and ponchos.

    Significance

    • After Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, the serape became a symbol of Mexican culture. In the 20th century, ponchos became popular worldwide as fashion garments for women and as outdoor or military gear.
