What Is a Sump Pit?

A sump pit is used in basements and crawl spaces to eliminate unwanted water. A sump pump will be installed in the sump pit and will be set to activate automatically whenever the water level in the pit reaches a certain level. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Depth

    • A sump pit should be a minimum of 24 inches deep, up to a maximum depth of 30 inches.

    Width

    • A sump pit can be square or round. The minimum diameter should be 18 inches, with a maximum of 24 inches. Some special applications can exceed this maximum distance.

    Pit Liner

    • The pit liner can be made of concrete, plastic, or vinyl. The object of the liner is to keep the dirt sides in place and any large debris away from the moving parts of the pump. One of the most simple liners is nothing more than a 5 gallon plastic bucket.

    Level and Square

    • The base of the pit needs to be as level as possible. Either a submersible or pedestal pump will be installed. For a pedestal pump the base needs to be almost perfectly level for proper operation. The sides of the pit should be at 90-degree angles to the base.

    Base Materials

    • The base of the pit can be a seamless continuation of the liner sides, or it can be a separate material. In some applications the base is made of gravel to allow the water to be partially absorbed into the soil beneath the pit. If gravel is used, it will be critical that none of it is allowed to enter the pump impellers.
