Sinus Headache

Sinus headaches are difficult enough to deal with, but when they are accompanied with sinus drainage (post-nasal drip) as well, they can be unbearable. Treatments can make sinus headaches much more bearable and comfortable.

  1. Facts

    • The sinus cavity is separated into 4 separate cavities that can easily become inflamed, swollen and irritated, leading to pressure buildup.

    Cause

    • The sinus pain is caused by the pressure in the sinus cavities, typically due to excess mucus trapped by swollen sinuses. The drainage is the result of the mucus being expelled in the back of the throat.

    Treatment

    • The most effective treatment to get rid of sinus drainage and head pain is to take a decongestant and an anti-inflammatory pain reliever such as aspirin. The decongestant will dry up the drainage and the anti-inflammatory will reduce nasal swelling and the pain associated with it.

    Prevention

    • Avoid allergens and wash your hands frequently to reduce the chances of getting the common cold. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, on a daily basis to keep the body well hydrated.

    Complications

    • If sinus drainage goes untreated it can cause mucus build up in the chest, leading to pneumonia. Untreated sinus pain can lead to a sinus infection that can spread to the ears, throat or brain.
