Reactions to Proin in Dogs
For dogs with urinary incontinence, veterinarians can prescribe Proin to help dogs' sphincters regain muscle tone that will prevent urine leakages. Proin does have some side effects, however.

Conditions to Avoid

Dogs with the following conditions should not use Proin: glaucoma, enlarged prostate, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure. It also should not be given to pregnant or lactating dogs.
Allergic Reactions

A dog that has had a previous allergic reaction to Proin's active ingredient phenylpropanolamine will likely react to Proin.

Common Side Effects

A dog on Proin may suddenly not be able to urinate, and may have pale gums.
Other Side Effects

Other side effects that have been seen are restlessness, irritability, excitability, high blood pressure and loss of appetite.
High Blood Pressure and interactions with other drugs

Your dog has a greater chance of higher blood pressure if he is already on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, reserpine, tricyclic antidepressants, ganglionic blocking agents, or your are using the Preventic tick collar or the flea control product Promeris.
