Hand Sanitizer Vs. Washing Hands
When it comes to personal hygiene and health precautions, is it safe to rely on hand sanitizers to fight germs or is hand washing the most effective preventative measure? Does this Spark an idea?
-
Importance
-
According to the Center for Disease Control, keeping hands clean is a major factor in preventing the spread of infection and illness. "Hand hygiene practices are key prevention measures in health care settings, in daycare facilities, in schools and public institutions, and for the safety of our food," says the CDC (see Reference 1)
Hand Washing
-
Washing with soap and water is the best way to clean hands.
-
Technique
-
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using a liberal amount of soap, rubbing palm to palm and then all over both the front and back of the hand surface for at least 40-60 seconds (see Reference 2).
Hand Sanitizers
-
Hand sanitizers are a good alternative to soap and water if hands are not visibly dirty. Sanitizers will not remove actual dirt, but do disinfect hands. Sanitizers effectively kill bacteria because they are mostly alcohol based.
Effectiveness
-
The alcohol content must be at least 60% for hand sanitizers to be truly effective. Some stores brands contain as low as 40% while most hospital grade sanitizers range between 60-90%.
Final Considerations
-
Washing hands of dirt and debris is very important in maintaining good hygiene and preventing the spread of infectious bacteria and disease. When soap and water is not available, alcohol based hand sanitizers are the best alternative.
