Fictitious names are somewhat like disguises.

Though given a birth name, many people take on other names for a variety of reasons. For several professions, fictitious names are a regular part of the business. However, fictitious names also have become common on the Internet, where users are able to enjoy anonymity and new identities.

  1. Pen Name

    • A pen name is used by a writer to avoid being identified so the writer can enjoy his privacy. Also, some names are not considered suitable for writers.

    Screen Names

    • Screen names are taken by computer users to afford the user privacy and to allow each username to be unique. Therefore, users with the same given name do not need to share the same username.

    Nickname

    • Nicknames are names that friends and family give one another that are not the official names of the individuals.

    Stage Name

    • A stage name is a fictitious name used by a performer. Performers often take on stage names that are more interesting than their given name.

    Criminals

    • Criminals, terrorists and resistance fighters sometimes go by fictitious names to avoid getting caught, arrested and prosecuted.

    Business

    • Companies sometimes use false names to conduct business. Businesses must register with the government to use fictitious names.
