Progesterone is a hormone essential a for healthy pregnancy. Production of progesterone increases dramatically throughout the pregnancy and can cause a variety of side effects that range in duration and severity.

  1. Digestive Problems

    • Relaxing the smooth muscles of the uterus, progesterone prevents early contractions, but can result in indigestion, constipation, heartburn, gas and bloating.

    Sweating and Acne

    • Increased sweat gland production may cause you to sweat profusely with little provocation and contribute to an acne breakout.

    Tender Breasts

    • Breast tenderness is a common occurrence, as progesterone stimulates the growth of breast tissue and prevents early lactation.

    Gingivitis

    • Because of progesterone, gums tend to swell and bleed during pregnancy. In severe cases it can lead to "pregnancy gingivitis."

    Joint Pain

    • Late pregnancy aches and pains are often due to progesterone having loosened cartilage and ligaments around the hip joints and pelvic bone.

    Production Location and Purpose

    • Progesterone is produced in the ovaries until the second trimester, when the placenta takes over until delivery. The hormone is responsible for maintaining the nourishing and safe qualities of the womb for the growth and development of the fetus.
