What Are the Traits of a Good Real Estate Salesperson?

Each year thousands of people get their real estate licenses, and hundreds give them up. Real estate can be a difficult business. You can work many hours for a client looking for just the right house, or trying to sell a house that just doesn't seem to interest anyone. Cultivating the right traits can help you be successful in real estate.

  1. Confidence

    • Being confident in yourself and in your skills is important to bringing two sides of a negotiation together. Deals will fall through or will be on the edge of falling through. Showing that you're confident, no matter what the circumstance, will ease the situation.

    Servant's Heart

    • You won't let people walk all over you, but you truly desire to help people. Be dedicated to serving your client, whether that means vacuuming their vacant house or previewing houses all over town because your client is in another state and can't come to look at too many houses when they are in town.

    Organization

    • Real estate is a business based on laws and paperwork. There is a lot of paperwork to keep straight, deadlines to keep track of and appointments to get to. Having a system in place that will keep you organized is essential to serving your clients well.

    Passion

    • You must have passion for real estate or you won't be motivated to sell a thing. You can't be in real estate just because you like houses. Eventually, they won't thrill you nearly as much as they did in the beginning. Soon, you'll be able to tell what's inside from just looking at the outside. You need to enjoy making the deals, dealing with people, negotiating and the organization of it all in order to truly enjoy your work.

    Self-Motivation

    • You have to be able to get yourself up and going in order to succeed in real estate. There is no boss telling you what to do and no schedule to dictate where you should be or when. You have to find your leads, follow up on them and get the sale mostly on your own. Motivating yourself is key.
