Citrus & Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections or cystitis are a painful and irritating problem for people of all ages. There are two typical causes of urinary tract infections: bacteria and dietary irritants.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are an infection or irritation of the bladder, urethra or kidneys that results in a need for medical intervention.

The Four Cs

According to the Mayo Clinic, "The most irritating foods can be summarized as the 'four Cs.' The four Cs include carbonated beverages, caffeine in all forms (including chocolate), citrus products and food containing high concentrations of vitamin C."

Citric Acid

Citrus fruits are high in citric acid. Citric acid has been show to irritate the lining of the bladder, causing irritation and spasms for those patients who suffer from reoccurring bladder infections.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid can cause irritation. Instead, consider eating bladder-friendly foods such as broccoli and potatoes to obtain the body's necessary servings of vitamin C.

Prevention/Solution

To avoid urinary tract infections, avoid consumption of the four Cs, drink plenty of water and urinate frequently.

Treatment

According to the Mayo Clinic, irritation-related urinary tract infections can be treated with medications such as ibuprofen, tricyclic antidepressants or antihistamines depending upon the type of irritation and what the body has previously responded to.
