Although they rarely take notice, people are surrounded by minerals every day. In fact, all rocks are made out of a combination of 2 or more minerals. Interestingly, it is not possible to have rocks without minerals. It is, however, possible to have minerals without rocks.

  1. Categorization

    • Minerals are categorized by their hardness, color, shine, magnetic properties, density, color and how they break.

    Crystals

    • Crystals are minerals that have formed into specific shapes with flat sides. It is a common misconception that crystals must be clear.

    Diversity

    • According to the GMB Services website RocksForKids.com, 3,000 different minerals have been identified on Earth.

    Crystal Shapes

    • The specific shape of a crystal is determined by what mineral formed it.

    Magic

    • There are many people who believe that minerals and crystals possess mystic powers. Diamonds, for example, are believed to offer protection from ghosts and magic.
