Acrylic Nail Powder Definition

Acrylic nail powder is used at nail salons to apply artificial nails. Sometimes acrylic is also used to keep the natural nail hard and to prevent breaks. Re-coating usually depends on how fast the nails grow. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Components

    • Acrylic nail powder is made of polymers, it's main ingredient being polyethylmethylmethacrylate, a combination of ethyl methacrylate (EMA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA). The liquid that temporary softens the acrylic as it is applied to the nail is monomer.

    Artificial Nails

    • The powder is used along with the monomer to apply artificial tips to nails. Nail glue is used to secure the tip. Monomer and polymer shouldn't be mixed prior to applying, as this will cause the coating to harden too soon.

    Manicured Nails

    • Natural nails are much more flexible than nails with acrylic applied to them. However, some people prefer to have an acrylic coating applied to their natural nails to prevent cracks and breaks.

    Stabilizers

    • Some nail technicians use color stabilizers in the acrylic coatings to prevent discoloration from UV light.

    Considerations

    • According to a project conducted by the U.S. Evironmental Protection Agency in March 2007 (EPA no. 744-F-07-001, March 2007), "Protecting the Health of Nail Salon Workers," some acrylic nail powders are known to contain irritants and carcinogens. People sensitive to irritants and pregnant women should identify that safe practices, such as dust masks and proper ventilation, are present at salons.
