Rash Due to Mange

Mange is a group of skin diseases caused by mites. Though mange is most commonly seen in dogs, it can also affect humans and other mammals.

  1. Demodectic Mange

    • Demodectic mange occurs when your dog's immune system cannot deal with a large number of naturally occurring mites. The most common symptoms are blisters on the dog's skin and redness. It most commonly appears on the face or on the paws.

    Sarcoptic mange

    • Sarcoptic mange is caused by a parasitic, contagious mite that burrows into the skin. This condition causes a crusty rash and severe itching.

    Demodicosis

    • When mange affects humans it manifests in a condition called demodicosis. Demodicosis appears as a reddish rash that looks somewhat like rosacea.

    Treatment

    • Depending on the type of mange you or dog has contracted, you will be given oral antibiotics, medicated shampoos or ointments to take or apply to the infected areas.

    Warning

    • Some forms of mange, especially sarcoptic mange, are extremely contagious. If your dog develops mange, it is best to isolate them until the condition is under control.
